A question we often hear is “Should I remove my towbar tongue?”
The answer is “Whatever is your preference!” The only reason that you would “have to” remove your towbar tongue is in the rare case when it obstructs the clear view of your number plate.
I have heard over the years various reasons our customers may choose to leave the tongue in. For example, to offer protection when driving (they feel the person behind will leave a bigger gap); or sometimes as a protective barrier for the bumper (they use it as a stop when backing up to a brick wall).
Others prefer to remove their towbar tongue for aesthetic reasons; for their own safety (hurts your shins when you walk into it); or so that it doesn’t get removed by someone else and is lost!
Some of our customers’ experiences we have on our “display table” may lead you to want to remove your towbar hitch tongue. Some of the damages have been caused by ‘leaving the tongue in place’, or, ‘overloading’!
There really is no right or wrong answer to this question, it’s just a personal preference that we each need to decide upon. We do however, recommend to regularly remove the tongue and give it a clean out so that it doesn’t “rust in your towbar”!
